In response to the Senate Democrats’ budget package and legislation that would impose an income tax increase, State Senator Jil Tracy offered the following statement.
SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Sen. Dale Fowler (R-Harrisburg) offered the following comments after the Illinois Senate passed another unbalanced budget on May 23.
SPRINGFIELD, IL – For the second week in a row, the Illinois Senate passed another unbalanced budget over the objections of Senate Republicans, according to State Sen. Paul Schimpf (R-Waterloo).
“Rather than work on a truly balanced budget and meaningful reforms, Democrats have simply turned right back to their old tricks, ramming through an out of control budget along with massive tax hikes. The Senate hasn’t passed a balanced budget in over a decade, and Democrat leaders showed that they have no desire to stop their out of control spending...
“The other side just passed an absolutely massive tax hike, adding completely new taxes, while refusing to support workers compensation reform or substantive property tax relief for struggling homeowners...
“We cannot keep asking taxpayers to foot the bill for bad decisions made by reckless, irresponsible career politicians who refuse to change the way they do business,” said Anderson. “I voted against this legislation, and urge my colleagues in the House to do the same.”
I have said for weeks that any compromise we reach has to be a good deal for the taxpayers, and that means having a balanced budget and fundamental reforms that will move Illinois forward. That’s not what happened today.
“It’s extremely disappointing that Democrats have decided to walk away from budget negotiations and pass a partisan budget with no reforms, along with a large tax increase that is retroactive to January 1st and includes new sales taxes. Their budget eliminates the cuts that were agreed to in bipartisan negotiations, and can only remotely be called ‘balanced’ because it completely ignores existing bills...
